About me
Hi I'm Jodie Scott a dog trainer and behaviourist based in Cumbria.

Qualifications: BSc (hons) Animal Behaviour and Welfare, International Guide Dog Federation recognised Guide Dog Trainer, Assistance Dog Specialist - Dog Training College..

Experience: In 2018 attained a 1st class honours degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Myerscough College. Prior to this I spent 7 years as a Nurse (humans!) before I decided to pursue my true passion of working with animals! I started my animal career working for Guide Dogs where I began as a kennel assistant before becoming a Guide Dog Trainer. I was able to develop some fantastic skills whilst working here and learnt how to really refine my teaching skills. I have been running Canine Understanding now for just over 4 years working with a variety of breeds and temperaments. I follow modern, ethical dog training practices. I will not use fear, pain or intimidation to train your dog. ​
1-1 training
1-1 Training & behaviour support
This is a bespoke service where you and your dog are our sole focus.
1-1s are useful for dogs displaying behaviour issues such as reactivity, separation anxiety, barking, anxious behaviours etc.
They are also great for general training requirements such as - loose lead walking, clicker training, recall, trick training etc.

1-1s include an initial assessment of your dog's behaviour to see what is causing it to occur. I will then tailor training and an accompanying training plan to meet your dog's specific needs.

I offer a package system to ensure you feel supported throughout your dog's training.

Virtual training & behaviour support
New service! I am now able to offer behaviour consultations via Zoom (this app is free to download). You will receive a behaviour consultation and accompanying training plan as part of this service. This is great for clients that are out of our catchment area!

Want to give your puppy the best possible start? Canine Understanding has a 5-week course covering all of your puppy essentials, whether you’re a first-time dog owner or a veteran. I use the most up to date scientific methods to help train your puppy, these are reward based and ethical. Classes are friendly and relaxed creating an optimum learning environment for all. The course includes 5 weeks of classes, a weekly training pack and email/messenger support for the duration of the course

These classes are suitable for puppies under the age of 20 weeks who are fully vaccinated. There is a maximum of 6 puppies per class. The course is currently held at Blencogo Village Hall (near Wigton).

Private puppy classes
​
Are you struggling to commit to the 5 week course or unable to attend the venue? Canine Understanding has a brand new service offering private puppy classes. This includes x3 tailored 1-1 sessions to help you get the best out of your puppy. These can be held at your home or at an agreed location. You will be provided with a training plan after each session and will have email /messenger support for the duration of your classes.

Assistance dog training
I am really proud to now offer assistance dog training focusing on psychiatric and neurodivergent needs. This training will provide full support towards owner-trained assistance dog readiness, including public access preparation.​ Training is tailored to your needs with an experienced assistance dog trainer who uses kind, reward based methods.

Initial consultation: includes a full behaviour and training assessment, goal setting and a personalised training plan. This is required for all new assistance dog training clients. £120
